Electric Zoo Friday Preview: Dog Blood (Skrillex & Boys Noize) @ Riverside

For those of you who suffered anxiety attacks when you didn't see Skrillex on the artist list, have no fear, he will be at Electric Zoo 2013 alongside co-conspirator Boys Noize, and better than ever. Boyz Noise and Skrilly's work on side project Dog Blood has propelled the duo to the top of OWLSA's roster, as well as to the top of my must-sees in the lineup this year. Deviating from the commercial success of their two individual names, Dog Blood has become a sanctuary for both to get back to their roots and plant new ones, exploring a different genre that calls more upon style than strict adherence to form. Rooted in both Electro and Techno, Dog Blood's style is not afraid to dig deeper into the grungier sounds of dubstep that allowed them to be propelled to such heights in the first place. Whatever you want to call it, the pair's sound is distinct from other artists of equal stature.

Since their formation in 2012, Dog Blood has come a long way, even from their not-so-humble beginnings as a duo. Their very first single, "Next Order," very quickly made it to the top of Beatport's charts. After a very busy solo period from both Skrillex and Boyz Noise towards the end of 2012, Dog Blood emerged from its hiatus to throw down the house at the first weekend of Ultra 2013. From there they casually released a few singles including casually releasing a few singles including the smash success "Wild For The Night" remix for A$AP Rocky. Since then, they've played Coachella, EDC Vegas, and Glastonbury Festival among others, and now the pinnacle of New York's electronic culture: Electric Zoo festival. These two are no strangers to Randall's Island, but we hope you're all primed for what happens when they come together this Friday. See you 8:45 at Riverside!

Skrillex BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

It's been a crazy year so far for Sonny Moore, and now's the time for his essential Essential comeback. The crazy rocker from L.A. initially spun for Pete Tong back in 2011, and his second run has been eagerly anticipated by fans and critics like myself alike. The new studio mix combines new music from Dog Blood (his energy-fueled Electro-Bass collaboration with Boys Noize), AC Slater, Alvin Risk, Knife Party, and Skrillex himself.

Free Download

While many rightfully predicted that the Skrillex persona would take a backseat after his breakup with Skrill-ex Ellie Goulding for Dog Blood to continue its grand unveiling, tonight's mix turned out to be an ode to his versatility as an artist rather than a promotion of his next undertaking. During the press conference at IMS Engage in Hollywood, Skrillex was asked regarding “the kickback” from veteran DJs and artists against his popular, video game-step sound. "I think there's so much criticism that's nice," he told the floor. "People love it, or they hate it. If you look at a painting in an art gallery, even if you hate it, at least it makes you feel something. You've got this new, loud, bombastic punk rock energy that's coming in with electronic music, then you have the old-school techno, which comes from a different place and energy, even though it's all electronic music. We're all coming together – there wasn't a Yuma tent [where underground house and techno names played] last year at Coachella, and now there is." Be sure to catch Skrillex alongside conspirator Alex Ridha (Boys Noize) at the OWSLA-hosted Riverside Tent Friday at Electric Zoo, after hearing their set at Ultra this year I can assure you that's going to be one party you don't want to miss!

(Video) Skrillex Lights Hair on Fire At His Own Birthday Party

Sonny was getting boozed with some Dub-whores for his birthday Tuesday at a private party in LA, when he got those famous locks a little too hot. Thank TMZ for this gem, I'm laughing my ass off right now. What a fucking idiot. This is what happens when Ellie Goulding breaks up with you. This.

"Leaving" (Original Mix) - Skrillex

They say that artists, especially musicians, are highly emotional beings and those emotions reflect deeply in their work. If that is the case, then Skrillex's recent break-up from Ellie Goulding (guess you can call her the Skrill-ex now) must have really gotten to him. His newly released EP, Leaving, sounds nothing like his classic glitchy Dubstep, but rather echoing a soft, ambient sound with melancholic touches. Although strange at fist, I'm beginning to like this new side of Skrilly that displays a new lyrical quality to his music and versatility to him as an EDM artist. Whether this change is welcomed or not by his fans, you won't want to miss this curveball Skrillex has dished out.

Smoking Section: "Wild For the Night" - ASAP Rocky ft. Skrillex

Yes I am resurrecting the Smoking Section just for this track. EDM is one of the saviors of our generation from the terrible embarassment that most rap music has become today. ASAP Rocky remains one of the lone wolves in the East Coast scene that manages to always be fresh and creative without any of that MMG bullshit. We get it: you're all fucking gangsters. Cool. Starting off with ASAP's classic low grunting that you heard in "Goldie," the track slowly drops into a spit session with Rocky complemented by Skrillex's bass chirps from "Birdy Nam Nam." Blast this one and toke up people, fuck being polite.
