Free Set Downloads: Ultra Music Festival Weekend 1

Well, that was quick. Weekend 1 of Ultra seemed to go by in one giant blur, with epic sets being thrown down left and right. With so much to choose from, it’s hard for me to pick out my favorite set of the weekend. For me the best (streamed) set of the weekend would have to go to Armin van Buuren, although Hardwell came in a very close second with a set that was so good Twitter had to shut down his account due to the overflow of tweets directed at him. I think this is only a taste of what Hardwell can do, and I can definitely see a #2 DJ award in the near future. Weekend 1 set a pretty high benchmark, and hopefully Weekend 2 will be able to match it. See you down there, and watch for our whole review of the weekend tomorrow!

Review: Above & Beyond at Cream Ibiza (Amnesia)

It’s every Trance lover's dream to hop on a spontaneous plane-ride and land on the sunny, fine grained beaches of Ibiza. I was extraordinarily fortunate to get to enjoy this special treat, to find out that my #1 trance aficionados and producers/DJs Above & Beyond were playing on my birthday at Club Amnesia for Cream night. After the sun-kissed beach and Pina Colada's days drifted away, the stars became alive and thousands upon thousands of dance music enthusiasts poured into one of the most acclaimed clubs in the world.

That was just a start to a long journey ahead, a thrill ride, with openers in the main room including top jocks Sander van Doorn, John O’Callaghan and Sean Huges. The terrace consisted of artists such as Calvin Harris, AN21 & Max Vangeli, Burns, and James Dutton. Highlights from the falling night into the rising morning had the crowd aching with anticipation; when Sander played Mayeni "Nothing Inside" and "Koko," while Calvin Harris had thousands chanting along lyrics to his hit record "Flashback."

There are two separate, massive rooms in Amnesia which connect for VIP club goers, with a walking path from one room into the next. With speakers booming at max capacity, the sound still doesn’t interfere with the pounding beats coming from the other DJ sets. The "supposed" hottest nightlife from NYC to Miami, Vegas to LA, all think they have it going on. But after living through Cream Amnesia, I must say they better step up their game and get on Ibiza's level! As the clock struck 2 AM and Above & Beyond opened, everyone lost all sense of time and place. Screens across their stage asked the crowd, "Have you ever closed your eyes on a rollercoaster? Fasten your seatbelt!"

And just like that, we were launched, skyrocketed and uplifted into a place where there’s no need for gravity, where fluent and flawless transitions of Trance music carried us all into the most supreme set I have ever experienced!

Two of Above & Beyond's members, Tony and Paavo, smiled as the phrase "We’ll be fine... Nah, we’ll be fucking amazing!" was plastered on their trademark visual screen. And straight into "Alchemy" we went, as imagery of doves came up spreading their wings across the stage and everyone's arms and hearts were ripped wide open. (Watch Video in HD).

Above & Beyond spoke to us not only through their music but through the words they transcribed onto their set. Next we saw, "Something new from two madmen from California" and all Anjunabeats fans knew "Bloom" producers, Norin & Rad, were about to drop. From there forth, tropical fish swam on the LED stage lights as "You’ve Got To Go," "Dream on Little Dreamer," and "The Sky Belongs to No One" echoed throughout the colossal club, inspiring us all to follow the lyrics, to "make something from nothing."

The Amnesia walls dripped sweat, and overpriced waterbottles were poured, gliding down our spines while the music melted our faces like candle wax. Simply the best tracks were played such as "Thing Called Love," "Prelude," "On my Way to Heaven" and "Love Is Not Enough," dropping as if they were explosive bombs. For their classic hit "Sun & Moon" a girl was able to do the honor on stage of letting the synth chords drop, to pierce right into our dancing bodies.

Above and Beyond change peoples lives around the world, connecting unlike any other live DJ with their fans, bringing people together to share an experience imprinted in our minds and etched in our hearts. This was not just a night in the club watching a typical DJ Set. This was a piece of modern art, a showcase and presentation of love through music, techni-colored lights and images, engraving lyrics and memories with special bonds that can never be broken. As the night was now sunrise, as we were all speechless to the experience we had just shared in, as Above & Beyond left knowing they just played the best set of their lives, and as we closed our eyes and opened our minds, we were left to dwell on the words that flashed on the Group Therapy screen right before our eyes:

"This is Ibiza. This is heaven."
