Throwback Thursday: "First Glance" - Matan Zohar (Mat Zo)

I hope this week's Throwback Thursday treats you well. Today we embark on a journey back to Mat Zo's New Year's Day 2010 guest mix for Above & Beyond on TATW 301, where he spun in his classic mix of "First Glance" under his formal name Matan Zohar. Though released over two years later on Armada, this classic Zo track gives us a glimpse into the artist's earlier experimentations with the electrified dubbed-out ambient sound that would soon dominate the airwaves. Stream the full extended mix below.

Track of the Day: "Satellite" (Mat Zo D&B Remix) - Oceanlab

Justine Suissa's firey tale of love and separation anxiety remains one of the absolute pinnacles of vocal Trance. The Sirens of the Sea classic has been warped into every mold imaginable with everyone from Seven Lions to its original producers Above & Beyond taking a bet on the remix roulette. Today I dug back in our archives in search of a chill mix to study to and started playing Mat Zo's liquid "DnB Mix of Love" that he put out back in December. To my surprise arguably the most powerful track off the mixtape and my favorite remix of this track to date hadn't been uploaded or even mentioned anywhere on the internet. The breaks in this are ethereal and suffocating, and it really showcases the side of Zo that we don't hear too much of these days. Enjoy!

My love is like footsteps in this snow, baby,
I follow you everywhere you go, baby.
The pain as light has come to wake you
But you will never realize
That I inspire the dreams that guide you, baby.

I follow the winds that bring the cold, baby,
I light a fire in your soul, baby.
The lightest touch of feathers falling
My love might be invisible
But I inspire the dreams that guide you, baby

You're a half a world away
But in my mind I whisper every single word you say.
And before you sleep at night
You pray to me, your lucky star, your singing satellite.

Your singing satellite

You say a prayer
You say a prayer

You're a half a world away
But in my mind I whisper every single word you say.
And before you sleep at night
You pray to me, your lucky star, your singing satellite.

You're a half a world away
But in my mind I whisper every single word you say.
And before you sleep at night
You pray to me, your lucky star, your singing satellite.

Apr162013 Rips off Arty & Zo's "Rebound," Quintino & Silva's "Epic"

We all knew this guy was off his rocker to begin with, but this just goes into lawsuit territory. Just take a listen to Will's pathetic vocals over an unmixed, unchanged version of our favorite song to dance to at massives back in 2011 and you will hear a very sad man who needs help. Maybe you should listen to "Bang Bang" first before you totally lose it, where he completely rips of Quintino & Silva's "Epic," although in a much craftier way. "Rebound" is just a stolen record, so I hope Anjunabeats is cashing out on this one because they deserve it.

"Hurricane" (Album Mix) - Mat Zo ft. Eyes That Lie

I hope you all have taken the chance to listen to Mat Zo's Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 that aired last week. The reason Mat's music resonates to deep is because of his versatility. If you tuned in, I bet you were surprised to hear how much Drum & Bass was played by the producer who found his fame in the international Trance scene. Even in his Trance productions like "The Sky," there's a deep reverberation and groove in his music, but his magical middle ground is in tracks like this that defy words, instead painting vibrant memories for the listener. "Hurricane" is a vocal single set for full album release soon, which has been well-received mixed into his sets since Winter Music Conference last year. A groundshaking production with a lot of soul and an eery beat, this one will truly set you adrift.
