Free Set Download: Drumcell @ Movement Detroit

The third day of DEMF was no doubt an interesting experience. Unlike Saturday and Sunday the skies were overcast from the moment we got to Hart Plaza. Those clouds slowly turned into torrential downpour closer to the night's end with John Digweed playing a soaked Techno set riverside to the hardcore fans at the Beatport Stage. Despite the bad weather Memorial Day had a huge attendance and the promoters were not about to let that go to waste (after all, "Detroit Hustles Harder"). From the moment the light started fading over Motown the bass and the volume were turned way up to compensate for the rain's drag on the collective energy. The only stage to stay warm and dry throughout most of the day was to head to the 24 hour twilight of the Underground Stage. The concrete surrounding the crowd from all angles reverberating the most incapacitating bass I've heard anywhere. The entire underground resounded an uncontrollable rumble that connected us all through the dark Techno sounds that crawled through our nerves from our toes to our stomachs.

One word comes to mind when trying to describe Drumcell's mix for the urban dance mecca: cutting-edge. As a sound engineer and one of Southern California's leading Techno crusaders, Moe Espinosa has been pushing the bounds of technological advances at the forefront of homemade hardware solutions since the turn of the millennium. After only a few minutes Underground with Drumcell I could tell that there was something special going on: jarring, loud, and aggressive Techno, all without the slightest hint of filler. Giving the set another listen last night, I immediately recognized the progression at 40:00 lighting up the faces and strides of everyone on the floor, so if you want a quick taste of what he has to offer skip to that. After close to an hour in the confines of the dungeon my ears sadly couldn't take it anymore (I've never had that problem before). Enjoy the entire set which we uploaded available for free download above, just please do us all a favor and play this at a decent volume!

Free Live Set Downloads from EDC Chicago

It's been chilly here in the Midwest, but the tunes are here to warm you up whether you're headed to DEMF or EDC Chicago this weekend. The inaugural Midwest stop of EDC was welcomed with open arms in Joliet, Illinois starting with the early campers who poured into the grounds on Thursday. Last night saw performances from the likes of Kaskade, Above & Beyond, David Guetta, and countless other headliners on top of a stacked lineup overall. So far my favorite set here is Gabriel & Dresden's, be sure to give it a listen! We'll be updating this post as more are uploaded and reuploading a lot of these so they're faster to download - but for now off to DEMF!

Free Download: My Favorite Sets from Ultra Music Festival 2012

The anticipation is building. It's getting cold on the East Coast, and we're all thinking about spring, sun, and the amazing festival season that awaits us on the other end of this hell. Today I'm feeling nostalgic about last year's venture down south to Miami for Ultra, which was one of the best experiences of my life. So now I present you with some of my favorite live sets from last year's festival. Unfortunately I couldn't include quite all of them (KASKADE!) because of sound quality and availability, but this covers quite a few and will keep me satisfied until March rolls around.

Pretty Lights

I've seen Derek play quite a few times but this was by far the best performance I've seen from him. The live stage at last year's Ultra was made for PL. I'm hoping they pick the same if he shows up for on the 15th anniversary lineup.

Carl Cox

Blew my mind. This guy is incredible and since he doesn't tour around the US too much, you must see him at Ultra this year. Last year he played in the afternoon at his own stage, and it was perfect. Tech House at its very best. Be sure not to miss him this year.

Bingo Players

Fuck these two are good. I'm not much for the House that gets a lot of radio play, but these two pull it off more than any two I've seen. Last year's set was mindblowing, here's to hoping they make it out again this year.

The ASOT 550 setup was prime last year, and I'm hoping that it's the same this year for weekend 2. ATB did an astonishing performance for the radio show last year, you'll just have to hear to believe what I mean.

Fedde le Grand

This set alone probably sent Fedde from budding DJ to superstar. One of the sunniest, most happiest afternoons I can remember, with this as the soundtrack. Get sauced and blast this shit.

Dash Berlin

ASOT 550 was something for the books, and I loved getting down in the afternoon to the sound of Dash Berlin. The Expedition makes its grand return to Bayfront Park this March. See you there.
