Free Download: "Battles and Castles" - Figure ft. Qwel

This is not one to miss - Figure has been releasing top-notch tracks at a breakneck pace over the last few months and he just put out this one with some dope verses by Qwel for free as a tribute to his girlfriend for Valentine's Day. Qwel is an independent rapper from Chicago who really lays down some awesome lines over an ominously melodic build, and the drop is done in typical fashion with speaker-blowing synths and snare drums hitting the listener in all directions. Figure has really been finding some great rappers to lay down the verses for his recent tracks (see "The Accident" with CasOne) and it's cool to see him fully take the reigns of independent music. The abrasive synths are supported by a melody that sounds like it is from a video game, but just in case you think this song doesn't go hard there is a vicious tempo change at the 3:30 mark that still makes this track headbanging-friendly. What can be better - consistently awesome, technically precise tracks under independent record labels that are released for free. Get this one now and if you're in Massachusetts check out his show this Friday at The Middle East in Cambridge and get your tickets through us!

Track of the Day: "Calling All the Lovers" - Manufacture Superstars (Figure Remix)

Figure is putting out remixes faster than I can keep up with, as it seems like I have posted a new original or remix by him for the last month now, but this one is a real treat. Manufactures Superstars rarely put out originals but Luciana has laid down some smooth vocals for big names like Wolfgang and Fedde le Grand before and she does not disappoint on this track. Her sultry, soaring vocals are quite the juxtaposition to the brutal "Figure-ized" bass drops in the song and it creates a wonderful balance between soft and heavy throughout the track. The ominous syncopation of the drums in the beginning instantly convey that this is no house anthem, and the synths even add a tad bit of mystery to the mix. By finding a balance between the two this track has the potential to gain exposure to fans of many different genres, proving the versatility of Mr. Gard's production skills. All of this is already quite a delight, but then the awaited tempo change comes in around the three minute mark to close out the song with a punch. The production quality Figure has been putting out is top notch for the genre - the snares and kicks are so meaty yet clean I almost feel like I could pick out one of his tracks just by the percussion. I am thoroughly impressed by the work this Gard has done recently and I've heard great things about his live shows so this one definitely is worth adding to your library. If you are in the NYC area don't miss him at Webster Hall next Wednesday - it's only 12 dollars!

Free Download: "Lifeline" - Citizen Cope (Figure Remix)

Josh Gard, better known as Figure, continues to pump out new content with his remix of Citizen Cope's "Lifeline". After dabbling in hip-hop with remixes of "Mercy" and his work with Cas One, this mix takes an entirely different turn by taking on a blues-like track that starts out with some slow, swinging acoustic guitar. Have some patience with this one; Figure's signature snares, synth, and grinding bass kick in around the one minute mark. This track may not be fit for throwing down as a club banger, but just when it seems like you know what's coming next, the second drop picks up to double time and the snares get furious! Overall this is a very solid release from Mr. Gard and shows his versatility between different genres. And to top it off, both parties released the track for free to spread awareness and raise donations for the east coast residents affected by Sandy! When EDMLounge interviewed Figure in October, he said his best suggestion for up-and-comers is to "just do you", and it seems like he is definitely taking his own advice!!

EDM Lounge Interviews FIGURE

Josh Gard has had quite the year. As FIGURE, Josh jumped into the growing scene and established himself as one of the breakthrough bass acts for the year 2012. With one of the most dedicated online fanbases of any electronic artist big or small, on top of an innovative, filthy sound, he's going nowhere but up in the coming months. We had the pleasure of seeing his headbanging closing set at Soundwave Festival in Tempe, AZ a few weeks back, and were lucky enough to ask the Dubstep prodigy a few questions we just had to have the answers to.

What would you name your take on Dubstep?

I suppose genre really isn't a part of my creative process. Something lends to the inspiration - whether it being something I saw, heard, thought, or read during the day - and then I write. It's just me being me. After something is finished and released, the public may associate it with this genre or that genre, but I would just say it's "FIGURE" music.

Is there anything different you've noticed about the crowd or the energy between smaller shows and massive events like EDC?

The support has been crazy. I feel lucky and blessed to get to do what I love to do. I still play a lot of shows where I have to take a step back and wonder how I got there. Red Rocks has always been a dream, and looking out from the huge stage at EDC and seeing so many people just going off... it's amazing. But I love the smaller shows. It feels intimate and the room is darker. People can just shut their eyes and lose it. That, and I like getting to hang out with everyone after the set.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened to you as a producer so far?

Every day is something new that freaks me out, such as getting to play some of these venues and collaborating with other artists I've always idolized. But mostly, I would say that the people that are listening are what make it most exciting. I self-publish, so it's powerful to create something and release it sometimes hours after it's done and get immediate feedback. No rules. It's more of a conversation than throwing stuff out there, hoping it sticks.

Any advice for people trying to break through into the DJ scene?

Just do you.

Do you have any hilarious or ridiculous stories from touring?

Tons… and I'll deny them all (laughs).

What can we expect to hear from you next, and when?

It's my favorite time of year, so I got to channel my inner horror geek and put out Monsters Vol 3 for Halloween. This one captures more of the creepy, scary feel of the season. It's out now on my site. After that, I’ve been working on some new stuff for the fall and winter.

How does it feel to have outdone the mighty Calvin Harris at Soundwave?

Ahh... none of that now. I think all the artists on the line-up did an amazing job making Soundwave a sick day for everyone that went. Some people say this DJ or that DJ is their favorite, and that's cool. It's good that the organizers work to make it diverse so there's something everyone can get into. I had a blast.

Can we get an ID on the track with the "there's no turning back now" sample? That one was particularly gnarly.

"No Turning Back" is out now on Monsters Vol 3 along with a remix by J.Rabbit that goes hard. It's one of my personal favorites from the release.

"This Is Halloween" - FIGURE (Free Download)

FIGURE is getting downright scary with his productions just in time for All Hallows' Eve. Figure took on "This is Halloween" the opening track of one of the most beloved fall movies of all time, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Starting the track out with an almost child-friendly vibe (considering this is a movie probably most of us grew up with) it sounds almost normal. You begin to wonder when that filthy, intense figure twist is going to come, then the drop hits ya! For those of you who are lucky enough to be able to see his Halloween show, be prepared to be scared… he's a bass monster!

Be sure to check out the rest of FIG's Halloween tracks and grab those free downloads!
