"Twerk" Bounces Into The Oxford Dictionary

The Associated Press reported last night that along with "selfie" and "Bitcoin," the word we've been hearing nonstop since "Express Yourself" hit the airwaves last summer was going to stick around. Oxford Dictionary associate Katherine Martin explains the origins of the newly defined verb:

"There are many theories about the origin of this word, and since it arose in oral use, we may never know the answer for sure," Martin said. "We think the most likely theory is that it is an alteration of work, because that word has a history of being used in similar ways, with dancers being encouraged to 'work it.' The 't' could be a result of blending with another word such as twist or twitch."

Surprisingly, the people at Oxford claim that the word has been hanging around informal speech for about two decades, despite the upsurge in its popularity in just the past year. This announcement comes after Diplo declared last week that he would be setting the world's record for biggest twerk wall this Sunday at Electric Zoo festival.

Track of the Day: "Watch Out For This" (Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike Remix) - Major Lazer

After producing Tomorrowland's official theme tunes for the past three years, Belgian duo Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike have become international sought-after producers for their profound editing skills, it is no surprise the duo have remixed Major Lazer's "Watch Out for This" with their recent successful African-inspired sounds heard in "Turn it Up/Mammoth" and "Wakanda."

Enhancing Major Lazer’s afro-cuban, laid-back track, the pair kick up the beat tenfold adding to their remix a perfect main room sound. The track starts out the memorable horn pattern that screams summer, edging into the repeated "watch out for this" chants, which combine perfectly to lead into a Progressive House line that makes you want to get out your chair and dance.

Track of the Day: "Boing Clash Boom" (Major Lazer Remix) - Dada Life

I always anticipate Dada Life's DJ Mix and May 2013's broadcast left my mouth watering. Olle & Stefan featured some banging remixes in their first for this warm weather and one in particular stood out: Major Lazer's remix of their own hit "Boing Clash Boom." Trap and the two Swedes are not a combination you'd usually expect, but one must not forget there are no rules to Dada. With Diplo's signature sound juxtaposed with some powerful bass and snippets of D&B there's something to appreciate in here for everybody. We'll update you when the extended mix drops soon!

"Watch Out For This" (Bumaye) - Major Lazer

Unfortunately for me, Major Lazer’s highly-anticipated album, Free The Universe, has been pushed back until April. I was devastated when I heard this news, but fortunately ML has decided to release the second single from the album (the first one being "Jah No Partial") to tide us over. "Watch Out For This" (Bumaye) is the polar opposite of "Jah No Partial," taking a lot of inspiration from Jamaican dancehall instead of the bass genres. Tracks like this are the reason I love Major Lazer so much: the music produced by Diplo and the rest of his crew has this unique ability to blend together a huge spectrum of different styles into one unique sound. There are no other artists out there that can go from Dubstep bangers to dancehall-Moombah anthems like Major Lazer can, which is the reason why I’m so excited for the full Free The Universe release. But until then, I’ll just have to bide my time with this hot new track!
