Official EDM Lounge Electric Zoo Preview

New York's Electronic Music Festival : Labor Day Weekend 2012 (Friday Aug. 31 - Sunday Sept. 2)

It’s spring and it’s May. The weather in the city is finally beautiful, and the only thing on my mind is festival season! With EDC NY, EDC Vegas, Governors Ball, DayGlow, Cosmic Opera III (the list goes on and on) still waiting to melt our faces, it’s hard to think about Labor Day weekend. But as I write this it’s hard NOT to think Labor Day. Why? Electric Zoo.

For those uninformed kids, Electric Zoo is and has been New York's electronic music festival since 2009, bringing top national and international DJs from across the globe to Randall's Island Park. This year, Made Event promises the biggest and most exciting Electric Zoo to date. Get there early because there are over 100 artists on the roster, spanning 3 days.

Can't Miss Acts:

Pretty Lights: Trip-hop? Glitch hop? Soul? Doesn’t matter; it’s EDM and we love it. The diversity of Pretty lights draws an eclectic crowd, from stoners to bassheads to those disgustingly smart and beautiful NYU girls (you know who you are) that party harder than any sorority girl from “typical college USA.” Derek Smith’s performance is sure to be highlighted in all the music trades. And make sure to check out the EDM Lounge Review of Pretty Lights at Ultra Music Festival 2012!

Laidback Luke: EDM Lounge favorite and House genius. He tore up Terminal 5 and Pacha a few months ago and his celebrated “Super You & Me” parties coming to NYC on June 16th will be sure to go down in the history books. If there is one DJ you NEED to see, it’s LBL.

Tommy Trash: After crushing Webster Hall last month, we welcome back Trash to the greatest city in the world and with open arms. His monthly mixes bring us smiles and his remixes give us tingles. This Aussie is sure to move everyone in the most soothingly way possible. Let his beats be an extension to your body as you sweat the night out.

Above & Beyond:  At EDMLounge, we love Trance. And we believe the widespread acceptance of EDM is finally giving this beautiful genre the justice it deserves. That being said, A&B are, arguably, the contemporary kings of Trance, with beautiful bass driven melodies and repetitiveness that sends you into utter bliss! Do not miss this epic duo when they (finally) hit the big city again!

David Guetta: Perhaps one of the most hated on DJs in the game but unjustly so. His popularity is a testament to his spinning skills. He’s endorsed by Dre’s Beats. So what? He destroyed Roseland Ballroom in the winter and he’ll close out Friday night’s dance fest with some of the most energetic poppy Progressive House tunes to smash your ears.

Dada Life: Their philosophy - “We are Dada Life. Destroy dance music and have fun. Don’t look back in the past. Always go forward. Don’t think too much. Always follow the money. Do the Dada. The result? Big tunes, no frills.” No clarification needed.

Wolfgang Gartner: We’ve given Gartner much praise here on EDMLounge. His was nominated for a Grammy and signed to the largest EDM label on the planet. There’s no stopping Gartner in 2012 and there should be no stopping you from seeing his amazing performance. If you like fun, you will be there.

Benny Benassi: Bringing 20+ years experience to this year’s festival and producing some of the best material Ultra has ever released, Benassi’s performance is highly anticipated. His synthesis of House, Trance and Techno is some of the most respected and recognized in EDM.

Bingo Players: Silly name? Yes. But their music, without doubt, is no humorous topic. Paul Baumer and Maarten Hoogstraten constantly destroy clubs across the US with their perfect blend of Dance and House. Miami was glad to have them. I can only hope NYC shows them the same appreciation!

Sander van Doorn: 33 year old Sander Ketelaars has been dominating the trance music scene since 2004. He’s constantly listed in the top 10 of every DJ poll and headlines some of the largest EDM festivals across the globe. I ask you, please see him; he’s worth it.

Tiësto: Undoubtedly the most well-known and experienced EDM star to ever walk the Earth. His progressive trance and electro skills will make your heart race and your legs melt. If you haven't already, it's about time to check seeing a Tiësto set off your bucket list.

Skrillex: Former Hardcore/Punk scenester and From First to Last front man whose won a million Grammy's this year. Skrillex brings west coast dubstep to the east coast this summer. His filthy filthy beats will sure to blow your mind.

Knife Party:  Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen have been releasing sweet dub since early 2011. You might recognize this solid EDM duo from their electronic rock band, Pendulum. Sink your teeth into their musical gems because they simply KILL. Knife Party will be the debut EDM act at Pacha’s newest venue endeavor, The Brooklyn Terminal Project. You can catch them on June 3rd. Tickets available at

Dash Berlin: Dutch progressive trance artist currently spreading love with his newly released #MusicisLife album (check out my review of the album here) . His songs are extremely melodic and uplifting and his trance beats are a a drug of their own.

Porter Robinson: America’s own and renowned for his impressive skills at such a youthful age (he’s only 19 years old). Some kids go to college. This kid destroys dance floors. Can’t wait to see him dominate an audience of +100,000.

Essentially, if you couldn’t tell, we’re SUPER excited for Electric Zoo (and you should be too)! It’s the "can’t miss” festival of 2012.

Here's the full lineup:

Be sure to get your tickets soon before they sell out. This crazed EDM fan bought his tickets earlier this year in February. What are you waiting for? Get tickets from Made Event here
