Review: Club Life Vol. 2 Miami - Tiësto

Tiesto’s newly released compilation album (out today April 24) Club Life Volume Two Miami, aims to bring the vibes of Miami’s nightlife to those of us who haven’t had the pleasure of partying there. Collaborations with artists, such as Gotye, Afrojack, Coldplay, Wolfgang Gartner, and many more can be heard in this album with Tiesto’s own personal touch. Additionally, Tiesto features such newcomers to the EDM world such as John Dahlback, Josie Cotton, Avesta, and The Naked and Famous. While this 16-track album packs a lot of the infamous Miami heat, it also heavily echoes the sounds of Tiesto’s past hits.

Club Life Vol. 2 starts off with the track “Miami,” giving a shoutout to the album’s birthplace. “Miami” uses vocal hypes from Tiesto himself and an echoing overcast to give the song an authentic “live from the club” feel. The following track, “Chasing Summers,” contains his signature crowd clap in the background with progressive house beats, guaranteed to be the next Tiesto classic. Another Tiesto banger on this album, “Life,” was actually produced by John Dahlback, who we might as well call Tiesto 2.0. If these three tracks were played back-to-back, there would be no way of distinguishing the difference. While undoubtedly still bound to get our bodies moving, “Miami”, Chasing Summers,” and “Life” all end up sounding terribly similar somewhere towards the 2 minute mark in each song. And seeing how a majority of these songs all hold a duration of 6-8 minutes, this section of the album is sure to send its listeners straight into a trance, or sleep, whichever comes first.

The two mainstream stars on this album are unquestionably Gotye ft. Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used To Know," and Coldplay’s “Paradise”. “Somebody That I Used To Know” is on fire right now! I swear this song must have been made with aural crack because every DJ is just dying to get their turntable-filthy hands on it to try and make their rendition more popular than the original. Now here’s where I’m confused: is Tiesto actually trying to remix “Somebody That I Used To Know” or is he just trying to promote his instrumental mix by tying it to the song of the moment? The song lacks any real instrumental-vocal intertwining; instead it sounds like Tiesto made a track and then slapped on a few of Gotye’s popular verses. The song is guaranteed to sound catchy with any electro beat, but Tiesto’s did not stand out from the other hundred mixes made off of this song.

Tiesto gets a bit more creative with “Paradise”, staying in character with the chill vibes of the Coldplay original, and making the song in to a trance gem. Just when we thought Chris Martin’s crooning couldn’t get any better, we get to hear his “Oh oh oh ohs!” encrusted with electronic pulses.

The one thing that Tiesto always brings to the game is his ability to take a normal instrumental mix, throw in a few lyrics and somehow culminate that in to a roaring anthem of our partying generation. The top three tracks off this album that embody the essence of us 90s babies are “Can’t Stop Me”, “In My Mind”, and “We Own The Night”.

Beloved Dutch House DJ Afrojack helps out Tiesto in “Can’t Stop Me” by creating a beat that matches the pace of the substance-fueled hearts of show attendees.  This is the ultimate dance track off the album, with vibrating bass kicks from Afrojack, the exhilarating synth tunes of Tiesto, and the iconic “If this was the last dance of the night, will you join me til the morning light? Dance the night away cuz it feels right, you can’t stop me now-ow-owww.” Enough said.

“In My Mind” is a different type of anthem in that rather than a party, rage fueled track; it's an emotional resurgence, but in the good way. The bass-heavy intro riles you up and then fades into velvety lyrics that evoke a nostalgia of young love. The song then hits us with a few slow, but hard synth beats as we pull up these personal memories, then jets us off in to a musical celebration of the good, the bad, and the best part of life: the crazy.

Now for my personal favorite, “We Own The Night”. On any given Saturday night, or fuck it, any weekday night too, we generally enjoy leaving our homes thinking “HELL YEAH WE OWN THE NIGHT”. Never mind that we’ll probably end up with no phone, no wallet, no identity and no idea where we are.  As Luciana chants “ Keep running with the fire, this time is ours.” If that’s not an anthem, I don’t know what is.

While some of his instrumental dance trance mixes do get repetitive, Tiesto holds his own with a few powerhouse tracks that depart from his original trance style (the right direction, I must add). But hey, it’s hard to be at the top of the electronic dance music industry for fifteen years and still know how to get the young generation raging, fist-pumping, gyrating…or whatever you’re in to. Not too shabby for a 43 year old DJ. (Did I mention he’s the same age as my Dad?)
